The British Society of Audiology recommends microsuction as the gold standard for ear wax management.

Microsuction is considered the safest ear wax removal technique by audiological experts. A 2019 systematic review in the Journal of Laryngology & Otology confirmed microsuction as the most precise method with minimal risk of complications, compared to traditional irrigation techniques.

Microsuction is a safe and effective way to remove ear wax using gentle suction.

The procedure is performed using surgical loupes (specialised glasses with magnifiers) to clearly see inside the ear and ensure precision. The process is quick and does not use water. Unlike traditional irrigation, it allows direct visualisation of the ear canal, enabling precise and safe wax removal.

Should your ear examination reveal no wax buildup requiring removal, a consultation fee of £20 will be charged.

  1. Initial Consultation
We will discuss your symptoms and medical history to better understand your needs.
  2. Examination
Using a high-definition otoscope, we will inspect your ears to determine if wax removal is necessary.
  3. Video View Of Your Ears
You will have the chance to see live footage of your ear canal on a screen. This allows you to clearly see the condition of your ear both before and after the procedure. Many patients find this helpful and reassuring, as it provides a better understanding of the process.
  4. Wax Removal
If required, we will use safe and effective methods to remove ear wax.
  5. Aftercare Advice
Once the procedure is complete, we will provide personalised advice to help you maintain healthy ears.

In most cases, wax can be removed without any softening of wax.

We do have some preparation recommendations:

  • Apply 2 drops of olive oil once to twice daily for 2-3 days prior to your appointment
  • The oil will help soften ear wax to facilitate easier removal
  • Avoid inserting anything into ear canal

When performed by a trained professional, microsuction is typically painless. Most patients experience only mild discomfort or a slight sensation of pressure. A 2021 clinical study in Otology & Neurotology reported over 92% of patients found the procedure comfortable and non-invasive.

A typical microsuction procedure takes 30-45 minutes. Initial consultation and examination are included to ensure safe and effective treatment.

Frequency depends on individual ear wax production. Most patients require removal every 6-12 months. The NHS guidelines suggest professional removal only when wax causes symptoms like hearing loss, tinnitus, or ear discomfort. Avoid frequent unnecessary removals to maintain natural ear protection.

Key indicators include: Hearing reduction, Ear fullness or pressure, Tinnitus (ringing in ears), Ear pain and Dizziness. A professional assessment can confirm whether wax removal is necessary.
